Paul is a born musician. At the age of six his mother placed him in piano lessons after seeing him sing entire tunes from the radio upon a few listens. Studying the Suzuki method, he became proficient at piano, then decided to begin playing the drums at the age of 12. He recalls playing his drum set the day he brought it home, and knowing exactly what he wanted to do in life. He played in jazz bands, and began studying afro-Cuban music while only in middle school. And In high school, he began gigging full time with various groups. He also helped lead the school marching band to state championships and the drum line to first place respectively. And upon graduating, was asked to coach the drum line, leading them to a first place state victory. Around this time he began playing with hip-hop band Accumen 1. With the group Paul shared the stage with renowned acts including: Talib Kweli, Saul Williams, RJD2, Jean Grae, Blackalicioius, Rhazel (the Roots) and Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Bjork). After a long run with the band, Paul decided to pursue a degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. While at Berklee Paul has played in afro-beat, salsa, and rock groups, performed with a 30 piece hip-hop orchestra for a Hurricane Katrina Relief Benefit show, and has performed at two of the schools galas. He traveled to Ghana, West Africa and engaged in an intense and rigorous study of African rhythms there. Bringing that knowledge back to the U.S., he has been a member of the Berklee West African Drum and Dance Ensemble, and will be performing with them at the PASIC festival this year. Paul has been teaching private instruction for eight years, and worked as a musical accompanist for dance classes at Boston University. He will soon be a graduate of Berklee. Paul lives with his family in Boston, Massachusetts. |
